Dashboards that once carried forty switches now carry a screen and a handful of stalks. The change was driven by manufacturing economics far more than by anything drivers asked for.

A switch is a part with a supply chain behind it

Every physical control is a discrete component with its own tooling, wiring, connector and supplier contract. It must be sourced, stocked, tested and warranted for the life of the model.

A screen absorbs dozens of those parts into a single assembly. The functions behind them become software, which costs almost nothing extra per car once it has been written.

That arithmetic favours consolidation on any model where a screen is already fitted for navigation and audio, which by now describes nearly the whole market.

Software lets one dashboard serve many markets

A car sold across dozens of countries needs different languages, units, radio bands and regulatory warnings. Physical controls would mean separate part numbers and separate assembly lines for each variant.

A screen handles all of it with configuration rather than hardware. The same panel leaves the factory identically and is told at the end of the line which market it is for.

Trim levels work the same way. Features that once required a blanking plate on cheaper cars are now simply absent from the menu, which removes a whole category of parts.

Interior designers gained freedom they had not had

Buttons dictate layout. They need reachable positions, space behind the panel for the switch body, and a wiring loom routed to each one.

Remove them and the dashboard becomes a surface rather than a control panel. That is why interiors converged on wide horizontal shelves and thin air vents in a fairly short span of years.

It also cuts assembly time, because fitting one connector is quicker than fitting thirty. Labour minutes per car are watched closely at volume.

What the driver loses is tactile feedback

A physical knob can be found and turned without looking, because the hand feels its shape, detents and travel. A flat panel gives none of that.

Using a touchscreen therefore requires glances away from the road, and the glance lengthens if the function sits inside a menu rather than on the first screen.

The cost falls hardest on tasks done while moving, such as adjusting temperature, demisting a screen quickly, or changing a driving mode in traffic.

Why some buttons are coming back

Safety assessment bodies have begun rewarding cars that keep core functions on physical controls, and that scoring feeds directly into how a model is marketed.

Several manufacturers have responded by reinstating a volume knob, hazard switch and climate controls while leaving everything else on the screen. The compromise keeps most of the parts saving.

The likely settled position is a small set of permanent physical controls for the things a driver reaches for blind, with the deep configuration left in software.
