Every car built for the American market carries a seventeen-character identification number that is not a random serial. Each position belongs to a defined field, which is why databases can decode a VIN without asking the manufacturer.
The first three characters identify the maker
The opening block is the world manufacturer identifier. It encodes the country or region of assembly, the manufacturer, and a broad vehicle category such as passenger car or truck.
This is why two cars wearing the same badge can start differently. A model assembled in one country and its twin assembled in another get different opening characters.
Small-volume manufacturers share an identifier block, with additional characters later in the VIN separating them. That arrangement keeps the format workable for builders producing a handful of vehicles.
The middle section describes the vehicle itself
Characters four through eight form the descriptor section, covering attributes such as body style, engine family, restraint system and series. The manufacturer chooses what each position means.
Because assignment is left to the maker, decoding this section requires the manufacturer's own reference. Two brands can use the same letter in the same slot for unrelated things.
This section is what recall systems and parts catalogs actually use. It tells a parts counter which engine and which restraint hardware a car left the factory with.
The ninth character checks the other sixteen
Position nine is a check digit. Each character in the VIN is converted to a number, multiplied by a weight tied to its position, and the results are summed.
The remainder of that sum divided by eleven produces the check digit, with the letter X standing in for a remainder of ten. A mistyped character breaks the arithmetic.
That is why a title clerk or an online lookup can reject a VIN instantly. The system is not consulting a database, it is verifying that the number is internally consistent.
The tenth character carries the model year
Model year is a single character, cycling through letters and digits while deliberately skipping characters that resemble others. I, O and Q never appear anywhere in a VIN.
Because it is one character, the cycle repeats every thirty years. Context resolves the ambiguity, since the eleventh character identifies the assembly plant and plants change over time.
Model year is also not calendar year. A car built in the fall is commonly titled as the following model year, which routinely confuses first-time buyers reading a title.
The last six characters are the serial number
The closing block is the sequential production number for that vehicle at that plant. It is what makes the VIN unique rather than merely descriptive.
Low serial numbers on a new model attract collector attention, though the number reflects build sequence rather than any difference in specification or quality.
Together the fields make the VIN a compact record. A stolen-vehicle check, a recall lookup and a title transfer all read the same string for different reasons.
